Descent of the Vouraikos Gorge

A Path Through the Wonder of Nature and Myth

One of the most unique experiences one can have in Greece is hiking through the Vouraikos Gorge — a breathtaking route that begins in the mountains of Kalavryta and follows the river’s course through awe-inspiring landscapes.

We walk alongside the tracks of the famous Odontotos, the most spectacular railway line in the Balkans, enjoying a trail full of contrasts and surprises. At every step, nature reveals its magnificence: untamed waterfalls, lush tunnels, abandoned stone-built houses with old telegraph poles — images that take us back in time.

Goats perch on rock faces sculpted by the river’s powerful waters, and the highlight of the journey: the impressive, stone-built aerial bridges — unique examples of old folk architecture that once connected the villages of the region.

As we progress, the scenery transforms almost magically: the vegetation softens, and the river’s waters flow peacefully toward the sea, bidding farewell to the mountain.

A Glimpse into Myth and History

According to mythology, Heracles once passed through this gorge. When a massive rock blocked his way to his beloved Voura, daughter of Helike, he split it in two with his sword at the point now called “Portes.” The gorge was named after her — Vouraikos.
